You’ve been logged on with a temporary profile

Have you ever logged onto a windows 2008 server had had this message pop up?

“Your user profile was not loaded correctly! You have been logged on with a temporary profile”

It’s annoying isn’t it.  There are a few causes for this, but the main one is that someone has incorrectly removed user profiles from the server.  I come across this a lot at work.  People get an alert for a server running running out of space on its C Drive and see deleting large profiles as an easy win which is is, if its done properly.

In windows 2000/2003 and below you could just delete a users profile from  C:\documents and settings and all was good.  This has changed post 2003 and if you do this on a 2008 server or above you will cause the user to get a temporary profile.  Instructions on how to remediate this

To remove the profile properly.  Log onto the server and go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System\User Profies. Click on the Settings button and then remove the profile.

Seriously, it’s that easy
